Now if you have substandard ins theres a good chance they will pull your driving record and your rates could go up but they should not go up by much. Most agents do not report conversations to the insurance co they work for unless it for something realy drastic. Now with homeowners if you call the claims department directly they will open up a claim and it will stay on your claim history. If you have a 1-800 insurance co most will open up a claim if you call to see if its covered. Most people have an agent and you should be able to call them and discuss if you should file a claim or not. Most if not all will give advise without opening up a claim. A good rule of thumb for homeowners ins is to have a $500 deductable and do not file claims under $1,000. Safe your insurance for when you realy need it and not some small little damage.

This has been my experience as well in dealing with my insurance agent (State Farm).
