mackie are really huge, though more for live music (very popular mixing boards, PA speakers, and high quality monitors for recording studios). I can attest that the HR824s are just about the best thing i've heard. There's absolutely no eq and you can hear all sorts of breathes and other sounds from CDs that you'd never imagine on normal speakers... of course they costs too much for me, but a friend of mine has a matched pair.

most of the stuff i work with is live sound... there are basically only 4 speaker manufacturers in the world (who make the actual drivers), so most companies just make the boxes to hold them. For amps i'd always go with a crown, or maybe a qsc to save a few bucks, but again, these things are LOUD and not really meant for home theatre (though they do have very low THD and can take a fall from 50 feet onto concrete with no ill effects).
