I don't think it's easy to say who got the good-bad end of the deal. Safeties are almost never in the top 10, let alone top 5, draft picks. The contracts awarded to draft picks are influenced by the position played by the draftee. It just so happens that aside from punters and kickers, safeties have lower salaries than every other position on the field.
If he cashes in on his incentives and he doesn't restructure his contract, Taylor's deal could be worth an average of over $6 million a year. Considering that a franchise tagged safety gets $4.1 million (see Donovan Darius), I'd say Taylor got a pretty good deal.
We gave Coles a $13 million SB and Taylor gets about that in roster and signing bonuses. Coles is a star, Taylor isn't. If we paid any more for Taylor I'd say we got our asses ripped off.
In any event, I'm far more concerned about how Taylor is playing on the field than any of this other stuff (i.e. agent hiring and firing and fines from the NFL). If he gets beaten out by Ohalete or Lott, I'm going to be just a little more than ticked off. It's very early (not even a week of camp has passed), but I think there is some reason to be worried.
Not to sound like a jerk, but I think my suggestion about trading down from the #5 is looking better.
