From what I understand, water intoxication is deadly because it dilutes the salt within your body. Humans must have salt to survive, and I believe this has been known for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. I suppose a combination of urinating and eating salt could have helped, and if the DJs were serious they could have still had the contest, but without fatal results.
She quit for the concert tickets, but she died before having the chance to go. Terrible.
