Honestly, I'd look into the water softener. They're not that expensive, and your girlfiriend/wife will have a much easier time with her hair after a shower...

also you can slap a filter on the tap and drink it instead of buying bottled water... which I'm assuming you probably do, since when I had that problem the water from the tap was nasty as hell no matter what kind of filter i put on it...
