I think your thinking of us supplying Iraq with weapons as they where fight Iran in the 80's and we did not want Iran taking over Iraq. We wanted to keep them from growing in that part of the world and as a nation.

I meant to Afghanistan around 1980. That was about the time when the Russians were occupying Afghanistan.
