At that point, many offensive philosophies shifted from big, lanky wideouts like Rice, Irvin, Chris Carter and Jake Reed to smaller, shiftier guys with the emphasis on speed.

Also, the NFL today is more about timing and a receiver’s ability to avoid tackles after the catch. You don’t see too many jump balls lobbed up in the hopes that the tallest man wins.

Bottom line is, teams are recognizing that having a 6'2, 6'3, or 6'4 receiver is a nice bonus, but not a necessity.

Now this is from memory but I don't think Rice Carter and Reed were very tall. Sorry no commas on this keyboard.
