I'd say for mileage and reliability go for a toyota or honda...I prefer honda.
Luxury is BMW, and they are extremely reliable, but can be expensive. Still they are cheaper than Lexus and Mercedes for the most part.
I am partial to GMC Sierra's if you want a 4X4.
