There is precedent for that type of arrangement. Cooke made Gibbs keep Richie Petitbon and Torgeson and the whole defensive staff as a condition for getting the job in 1981. The problem of course is that the perception is that the defense is better than the offense at this point. Likewise in 1981, it was the offense that had been holding the team back. If you condition Saunders, you're saying "Win, but you have to do it with this slightly disfunctional side of the ball".

I just can't see Williams staying regardless of the new HCs background. Williams role here has been something more than just coordinator but less than HC and he knows that Gibbs allowed that when nobody else will.
