Re: Rumors: Big Name Coaches
Other than Gregg Williams, I'd certainly welcome Marty Schottenheimer back into the fold. Daniel Snyder was way too hasty in getting rid of him the first time. I think Marty would be inheriting a really good team, better than what he did previously. With that said, we could really see the Redskins being at least a constant playoff team year in and year out.
Someone else mentioned Jeff Fisher. That is another guy I wouldn't mind coaching the Redskins, but I think he has signed an extension with the Titans. Mike Holmgren? The guy also knows how to coach and he has a Super Bowl ring. He's built a constant winner in Seattle, and we all know how successful he was in Green Bay. That's another guy I would not mind seeing as head coach.
For some of the other names...Dennis Green, Dennis Erickson, Jim Mora, Jr, the only one I'd take from those three would be Jr. Green was successful for awhile in Minnesota, but his coaching stint in Arizona kind of soured me on him. Dennis Erickson has so far been a dud at the NFL head coaching level.
Other names that have been mentioned that are surpising, but I never could imagine theses guys coaching the Redskins: Barry Switzer and Jimmy Johnson. Both are ex-Cowboys coaches and that just doesn't seem like good karma (if you believe in karma.) I was never really that impressed with Switzer. I realize he won a SB with the Cowboys, but heck, Johnson had given him the keys to a ferrari. It's not like Switzer had to build that team any. I've always respected Johnson. He's one heck of a coach. However, he couldn't repeat the same success in Miami that he had in Dallas. Let us also mention that he's been gone from the game (except for being on a pregame show) for quite awhile now. I just wouldn't see it working out with him.
I still believe Gregg Williams will be our next head coach and all this other interviewing coaching candidates might be for possible assistant positions for Williams' coaching staff. While we're all chomping at the bits to know who the next coach will be, I applaud that fact that Snyder is taking his time and not making a hasty decision. All of us fans want a coach who can have the Redskins as constant winners, and who can win us a Super Bowl or three. If it takes awhile to find that guy, then I think Snyder should take as much time as he can. Of course giving the new regime a chance to get things rolling in the offseason.
