"Senator McCain suggests that somehow, you know, I'm green behind the ears and, you know, I'm just spouting off, and he's sombre and responsible," Mr. Obama said.

"This is the guy who sang, ‘Bomb, bomb, bomb Iran,' who called for the annihilation of North Korea. That I don't think is an example of ‘speaking softly.'"

Mr. Obama was referring to an offhand remark Mr. McCain made in April 2007, when he responded to a question about the potential for military conflict with Iran by singing ‘Bomb bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran,' a variation on an old Beach Boys song.

Mr. McCain became defensive at the reference. "I hate to even go into this. I was joking with an old veteran friend, who joked with me, about Iran."
