You would allow JC to falter through the entire 2009 season before going to Hasslebeck? Oh no, I'm too old and impatient for that!

How about this instead? If JC falters in the 3Q of the first game of 2009, then Hasslebeck takes over in the 4Q of that game.

Then, JC can start the next game. If he plays well, he stays in. If not, we go to the relief pitcher again.

I think it's good for a player to live in fear of losing his job. That way, a coach knows that he's got the player's attention.
