A player like Mack is the perfect example of a guy that the scouts usually will not miss on. If three different Redskins scouts work him out, and they come to a consensus answer that he's the best college center they've ever seen, then you can bet your life he's going to be a good value pick at 13 overall.
Then again, there's always the one guy who tries to find a flaw in everyones game, as to protect himself in case he busts. If I'm running a team, I don't want those guys within breathing distance of by evaluation process. Of course, there's no telling how many of those guys the Redskins already have on staff.

With first round centers the two guys that come to mind for me are Jeff Faine and Nick Mangold. Faine became productive eventually but on draft day he was considered one of the few sure things only to be replaced by LeCharles Bently. I haven't really kept track of Mangold, though on draft day I predicted that in three years the Jets would have one of the five best O-Lines in the league. Judging from their performance this year with Thomas Jones going to the pro bowl it looks like they're doing pretty good for themselves, though eventually they did have to patch things up with Faneca and Woody.
Spencer was another first round center from recent memory but from what I can recall he was drafted as a Center/Guard combo.
The funny thing is Kalil might be better then all of them, and if you don't believe just look at how DeAngelo Williams (my Facebook friend lol) broke out this past season after Carolina basically overhauled the entire line, among which Kalil was made a starter.
Anyway as a rule of thumb I feel that with pro bowlers usually the deepest you can go is the first round with tackles though you have exceptions like Jansen and McNeil. Then with Guards I think you can usually get a quality prospect in the second round. And as I said before I feel like many good centers usually fall to the third round though it seems these days that the best are being picked up in the late second (case in point Kalil and Pollack). Still a few good prospects in Wallace and Lichtensteiger lasted until the fourth round last year.
