I just re-read Kennedy's inaugural speech for shits and giggles and I have to say that if he gave that speech today I'm not sure people would say it was all that great. I mean, is the "Ask Not" stuff really great on its own or has it just become kind of accepted mythology at this point. Perhaps speechmaking is a 20th century thing. We're all used to heavily edited shotgun blasts of visuals. I'm not sure any speech can really move a crowd. Carlin was hip to this at the end. He was doing rapid fire stream of conciousness because I think he was convinced that young people today can only assimilate fragments and not extended verbal narratives.
I tried to find the Carlin bit on YT but I didn't see it. It was real machine gun style. If anyone knows what I'm talking about and can find it, please post it. In addition to making my point, it's also really funny.
