There were many injuries back then. Jurgenson, for example, missed most of the '72 season with an Achilles injury.

However, it is also true that NFL players have gotten both bigger and faster than the in the '70's. Back in the day you just could not find folks who were 250 lbs. and ran 4.5 40's or 300 lbs. and ran 5.0. 40's. So, since momentum=mass times velocity, the momentums of today's players are much greater, resulting in the greater possibility of injury.
