ESPN 980's transmitter is in Hyattsville, whereas 106.7's transmitter is in Merrifield, VA (Beltway and Route 50). Even so, the AM wavelength is longer than FM, so while it tends to be weaker, AM's signal is further reaching.

Yeah, it has to do with the different signals broadcasting around the area at that end of the frequency. Between 106.5 (Baltimore), 106.9 (Hagerstown/Frederick) and 107.3 (DC), there are many strong FM signals that can wreak havoc. Once you get north of 370/124 in Gaithersburg, 106.7 is a crapshoot...
