Essentially, that's the decision. If the roster spot he vacates has more value to the team than Portis being here does, it would be nonsensical to not cut him a check and move on. If Portis has any positive residual value that you couldn't replace with an undrafted free agent, then we should keep him.
And that's a tough call completely honestly. He may not have any value with the ball in his hands, but his blocking alone could justify his roster spot.
