That's war. Collateral damage happens. Stay out the way if you don't want to get killed.
As for the van, another dumb decision, especially with kids in the car. Don't drive up and try to help the guy when choppers are still overhead. Get your kids home first, then if you still want to be brave and risk your life trying to pick the guy up, go ahead. But do so knowing you're in a war zone.

Ummm, the whole country is a war zone. You can't go anywhere without your kids being in danger. Can you minimize the ganger? Sure but in this instance it came down to whether you should help someone on the ground bleeding to death or leave them to die.
