for what it's worth, I listened to the Thundering Herd podcast yesterday and he said the Skins had one of the best drafts of any team. He criticized other analysts for praising teams like the Eagles and Patriots who have multiple 2nd round picks every year and claiming that they had great drafts when if you look at the team 2-3 years later, those 2nd round picks arent doing anything. He said the Redskins used their 2nd round pick on Donovan McNabb, who will be better than Bradford, Clausen or any other rookie QB over the next 4-5 years and then we used our 1st round pick on a guy who will be a solid starting left tackle for the next 10 years. Then we used a late round pick to acquire a starting defensive end in our new defense. Heessentially said that those three guys will do more for our team this year than any three players drafted in the 2nd round by teams like philidelphia and new england. cowherd bashes the skins all the time so it was nice to see us get some praise from one of our biggest critics.

For those that hate the idea that we spent a 2nd rounder on a 33 year old QB, consider this - i think i saw a stat somewhere that showed something like 50% of 1st round QBs and 90% of QBs taken in the 2nd rounder or later were busts. Clausen could end up being great, and i think the panthers got great value selecting him with the 48th pick, but the chances of him being great are slim to none. mcnabb could start for the next 5 years if we wanted him to. even if we had traded up in the 1st round to get sam bradford, and even if he beat the odds, we'd have to give him a new contract or let him walk in 5-6 years anyway. so really, NOTHING is garaunteed for 5+ years anyway. given the choice, i think we made the smart decision by using a 2nd rounder on a guy we KNOW will play at a pro-bowl level (or close to it) for the next 5 years. obviously, we'll have to draft his replacement at some point. But i think whomever we draft has a much greater chance of success if he's learning from McNabb than if he were learning from Jason Campbell, Rex Grossman, or Colt Brennan. I'm not trying to knock Kevin Kolb, but i don't think he'd be anywhere near the player the Eagles think him to be if he hadn't been working closely with McNabb for the past 3 years. Hopefully, we can draft someone with alot of potential in 2011 and they can reap similar benefits learning under McNabb. Who knows, Pineapple Jesus may surprise us all and develop nicely under McNabb and the Shanahans.
