Yeah this sounds about right to me. Problem is they often have to pay for health insurance out of pocket. Restaurants are not known for providing the best health insurance, though admittedly I don't know what Hooters' benefits are like specifically.
$50K for a company like Citi in a data analyst type role, or something like that, is worth a lot more than $50K from waiting tables at a typical restaurant.
