I think it was the Aussies that had to go look for her, not U.S. tax dollars, so who cares.

Sticky situation. Are the parents dumb/negligent for letting her do this, absolutely. No way I let my 17 yr. old son sail solo around the world. However, if the Aussies send a bill to the family what happens when another boat comes into distress in the same area through no fault of it's own? Do they get a bill too? The seas in that area are pretty bad from what I read.
