It's an I dunno. There's no franchise tag to use without a CBA. But there's also no free agency to have to protect them from.
In the absence of free agency, McNabb wouldn't be eligible to go to anyone else unless we allowed him to. We'd, essentially, own his rights until traded or retired or relased. Players won't play under a system like that, so that's why the easiest solution is to just postpone the league year until they can figure out what to do with the franchise tag.
They very well might get rid of it in a bargaining chip, but he's our quarterback. We don't need a franchise tag. If we want him, and pay him like we want him, he will stay.
