78/5 = 15.6 mil per year. For the purpose of this post lets' assume the 40 mil guaranteed is going to come in the form of roster bonuses, signing bonus, etc. and divide that by 5 too. So 40 divided by 5 is 8. Add that 8 to the 15.6 and the rough sum is 23.6 mil per year.

Now we all know he's not going to see all that money, I'm assuming he'll retire at some point in this contract or take a backseat to a young up and comer (hopefully) and we'll restructure it or something, but my final sum of 23.6 mil per year is nowhere near close to the 8 mil per year you are suggesting.
You can't add the 8 mill to the 15.6 mill.

78Mill over 5 years = 15.6 mill per year.

40 mill of the 78 is guaranteed so of the 15.6 mill per year 8 of that is guaranteed.

BUT

Chances are the bulk of the 40 is in the first few years, so probably its more weighted like 25 per year the first two years and 12.66mil the last 3 years.

Here is a link to a good article (not on the salary but the benching/extension connection)
