Spread QBs can make it, Newton's bigger issue is the system he played in wasn't a particularly standard spread system. It was closer to Urban Meyer's system than Bob Stoops' pro spread.

Bress, Bradford and Ben R. played in 4 and 5 wr sets were the emphasis was throwing the ball downfield, not the type of spread that Florida, Aurburn and Texas run....where the QB is running just as much as he's passing. McCoy didn't play in a true forward pass type of offense. The jury is still out of Tebow and McCoy. Both guys have only played in a handful of games.
I remember watching Heath Shuler in college and he played in the same kind of offense that McCoy did and that's who McCoy reminds me of.
