It's not as dangerous as you'd think. When ammo gets hot enough to explode, they act like miniature bombs rather than bullets. It doesn't really project the bullet, like it would if fired from a gun. When loaded in a gun, the energy created from detonating the cartridge has only one way out (at your target). When it's not loaded in a gun, there is nothing limiting the escape of the energy, so it dissipates much more quickly, and with less concentration. Often times, the brass shrapnel from the shell thrown during the explosion is more dangerous than the bullet. (The bullet has more mass, so the shell will be propelled away from the bullet).
