I think holding on to Gardner this season could work, but I have a couple concerns:
a. I'd still like to see McCants get a shot as the big posession WR. Yeah, he's not as fast as Rod, but he can catch the ball, especially in clutch situations.
b. Don't forget about the $2 million in cap relief that comes with trading or releasing him. They'll need that room to sign rookies and have a little room for preseason/midseason injury replacements. Someone will need to go...maybe June 1 cuts?
