Oh and there just one more thing, to quote good old Columbo. The beauty of the current Redskins-Cowboys debate is the dichotomy between the goals of our respective coaches, something I sincerely believe stems from loyalty.

Parcells has no major personal connection with the Cowboys, as he has been equally associated with the Giants, Patriots, and Jets. In fact, he spent the early portion of his coaching career hating Dallas. He is there simply because it is a high-profile that piqued his interest in rebuilding sorry franchises. In other words, his motives are purely selfish, and his goals for the Cowboys are all centered on the next year or two, because that will be the extent of his tenure there. My point is, he has no real desire to see them succeed after he leaves. Sure, he'd like if they did well (I think, although perhaps he might like to see them fail without him at the helm) but he doesn't bleed silver and blue. This is exceedingly clear in some of his moves, like continually bringing in old veteran QBs and stunting the growth of Henson, or any of the other numerous signings they have made of players who will really only contribute for 2 or 3 years max. This is just wonderful for Redskins fans, because we have seen the consequences of mortgaging the future on the more instant gratification of veterans. They did have a very impressive draft, but even that consisted mostly of players with the ability to contribute early but with limited upside. The exception there is of course Demarcus Ware, who could be an awesome player.

Gibbs, on the other hand, lives and dies with the Redskins. He has been the face of the organization for over 20 years; even when he wasn't at the helm, he was regarded as probably the greatest legend in Washington football history, with perhaps the exception of Sammy Baugh. Gibbs's desire for the Redskins to become the greatest team in the NFL as soon as possible is probably matched by Parcells's, but the difference is that Gibbs is building the team to maintain its position at the top of the heap. We are actively developing young talent, breeding impressive depth, and attempting to control our cap and free agency. It's a great feeling to know we are building for 2005 and beyond, as opposed to dealing only with the here and now.
