Here is the fundamental difference:
New Year's Day IS a Holiday already
Super Bowl Monday is NOT a Holiday already. To create a Federal Holiday - - or to get rid of one as the Congress did with the creation of President's Day - - requires legislation.
There is going to have to be a TON of pressure on Congress to get rid of a Holiday called New Year's Day because some folks will be upset about losing that Holiday. The fact of its existence makes it difficult for a Congressthing to start a campaign to take it away from folks.
It will take an equal amount of pressure on Congress to create a new Federal Holiday. And as soon as someone starts to do that, there will be competition from various other "interest groups" who would like a day to honor them or one of their heroes/heroines.
If you think you have a winning argument here vis a vis New Year's Day, it will only cost you 44-cents to mail it to your Congressman. Me, I have better things to do...

There are plenty of other countries who have many more holidays than we do. We need more holidays. Forget Super Bowl Monday - we need Super Bowl Week. And Arbor Week, I might add, as well as Groundhog Week.
