I think this may have been his master plan. He rigged his place with explosives and trip wires and turned the music (via timer) on loud hoping to draw the police via neighbor complaints. Once the police kicked in the door, the bombs would have gone off, and it would created the diversion for him to have more time to kill.

Did Aurora, CO shooting suspect James Holmes try luring someone into apartment?

Did I mention that I was really disappointed they took this asshole alive.
