Mike dropped the ball on this one and should have been the responsible "parent", especially dealing with a 22 year old kid who thinks he's invincible.
Shanahan let his ego get the best of him(yes,Mike has one) and has not been in a winning position like this in a while. He wanted to win at all costs even if it meant running his shiny toy into the ground.

NFL coaches aren't parents to the athletes. They are there to win games. And I imagine Griffin would take offense to that concept as well. He was paid multiple millions to be on the field, he wanted to be on the field, no medical assistant said don't put him on the field, and the coach let him go on the field. This happens a lot at the end of seasons, and even in playoffs. Ultimately the coach is going to listen to everyone around him and make a decision.
