Hell, If this cap penalty holds (which for all intents and purposes, it will), I don't even think the front office thinks we are contenders this year. My feeling is that the front office is willing to take a step back this year to take a gigantic leap forward in the years to come.
We'll become a prominent and formidable team that consistently is in the Super Bowl discussion, but it won't be this year.

3-4 years would ensure that we go through another regime change, so I hope your personal opinion is off base. As for who in their right mind thinks we can compete? I would think most analysts will have us up there in the playoffs, and I think if Griffin comes back with any reasonable ability not to go "superman", than we will have every reason to be in the NFC Championship.
Fact is, this FO is making a concerted effort to keep the parts that are working right, and finding players in the draft and FA that supplement our base. Of course anything can happen, but with RJackson back, our OLB corp is solid, our DL is good, our OL looks consistent, and we have reasonably good skill position players on offense.
3-4 yrs is overly pessimistic.
