When Gibbs is gone

I don't want him to go in any way but I was bored and started to look foward beyond next season and the thought occured to me:
Joe Gibbs is a winner. Everything he does seems to work out well. But one thing he had his hands on didn't turn out so well: his leaving the first time.

Now it is pretty much accepted that he had to leave for most of the same reasons that hard core coaches tend leave for. Over-worked, exhausted, health problems, more family time, etc.... All accpetable reasons for leaving. Especially after the success he had seen. But when he left the organization was stunned and left reeling. The team went into disarray and within two years every one of his assitants was gone. It was a disaster that has haunted the team since.

It seems to me that this time he is not only gearing up to get one more Lombardi but he is also gearing up to be gone again. A winner like him can't possibly feel right about how everything worked out the first time so this time he is doing everything he can to not only get quality people here now but to do everything to keep them for when he is gone.

It occurs to me that we have FOUR head coaches on this team. Gibbs, Williams, Saunders and Bugel have all been head coaches in this league and I have to wonder if that has ever happened before?

Anyways to end this ramble with something to discuss. I would like to honestly thank our stand up coach not just for his integrity and ability to put together winning footballs teams with character but also for doing a better job of looking out for the future this time. It is the only thing that can be looked upon with any semblance of negativity from his first tenure and it looks to me like he is making right on that. We truely do have a one of kind coach and I for one am grateful for the day the Ol' Ball Coach high-tailed it back to where he came from.

Why are you worried about this now? He will be there at least one more year. Worry about the salary cap and this upcoming year.

What's wrong with looking foward? And I'm not worried about it. That's the point. We have plenty of time to discuss the salary cap and the draft and all that stuff. It will be discussed in excess I can promise you. I don't think broaching something else like the distant future ad how we're preparing for it now is out of line considering I think it is obviously a cornerstone of what Gibbs is trying to do.

Plus, it's a more important topic of interest as opposed to discussing TO every two weeks.

the team should be much better off this time gibbs leaves, there are plenty of good coaches on this team who can take over

The first time Coach left it was a "perfect storm" of bad events that caused the Skins to fall so fast:

1. The team was getting old.
2. Free Agency cost the team some valuable players e.g. Gary Clarke, Mark May, Mark Schlereth.
3. Nearly every player that Casserly brought in through FA was el busto e.g. Tim Mcgee, Al Noga
4. Desmond Howard (drafted in 1992) was el busto
5. Richie Petitbon was ill suited to the Head Coaching job.
6. Petitbon and Casserly did not get along.
7. Injuries
8. Offensive Coordinator - Rod Dowhower

It is unlikely that events would conspire in such a way the second time around.

I dont know if pettibon was not suited for a head coach or not,it might have been circumstances beyond his control,but i loved him as a def coord,his def were always good,its a shame he dissapeared after he was fired,i wonder what happened to him and where hes at now

I for one think this will definitely assist Gibbs in staying through his contract cuz this helps him spread out the duties/stress to 2-3 extremely capable coaches and is less likely to heap every single problem and issue onto his own shoulders to solve.

No doubt that Petitbon was a defensive genius. I seem to remember rumours about laxe discipline though. Maybe that was started by the Casserly camp.

Gregg Williams will probably replace Gibbs after he leaves. Theres a clause in Williams new contract that pays him $1 million dollars if hes not offered the Redskins head coaching job when Gibbs retires.

Handing down the burgundy and gold torch is not a light hearted subject. Williams is being groomed to get it right the second time around, NOT thrown to the wolves. Gibbs will either win a SB in his next 3 years or he will happily retire, knowing he's one of the GREATEST. When he retires Williams will be our Head Coach. Period. And Williams will be a Champion, somebody that Gibbs purposely brought in.

Winning is not everything, it is the only thing.

Even if Gibbs will stop coaching with the skins, he should act as president of football operations for Dan Snyder, at if this will push thru redskins will always be acondenter no matter who will be his successor as coach

Lets not all forget why Gibbs came back. He came back to right a ship that has been on the wrong path for 13 years. I believe everything he is doing is to setup the Redskins to succeed not just now but in the future. Even if he retires once again I'm pretty sure he'll be part of the organization in some capacity.

Not only that, but he came back for his son. His son wants to coach, and I'm sure he'll get his shot. I wonder how he's progressing, and certainly being surrounded by williams and saunders, breaux and buges, (not to mention his dad) has to rub off a little.

I think (looking farther into the future) it will be interesting to see if the skins have a Coy Gibbs era sometime in the next decade or so.
