Filling the rest of the roster holes.
TE, LB, CB, DT, K, P
obviously we need a TE, 3 names have been mentioned. with only a 2nd round pick, i assume we'll sign someone for 1-2.5mill a year depending on skill. dan campbell would be the firsst choice, he'll be meeting with the giants and jets in the next two days though. as for OL backup: the cards tendered OG R wells low, so there's a chance to get a good backup (currently a starter) quality Guard for only a 6th round pick (which is truly worthless). that saves a pick, but starting OL tend to want 2+mill a year, so the only cheap answer would be a draft pick (and a late pick is very hit or miss, which we can't afford if we're really trying to make a run now). CB/DT/P/K - ? depends on how much money is left and who's left. one of the 3 positions (CB/DT/OL) will be draftable and set with the 2nd pick. The 5ths and below aren't sure things at all, and while young punters (like koch) will go undrafted and be an upgrade over frost, there are no kickers in this draft class that look even average right now. jahri evans (OG), joe toledo (OT), and gerrick mcpherson (CB) might slip into the 5th, so if we get a high 5th or 4th for ramsey, it'd definately be a good thing to have. In the 6th there's very very little as far as standouts. ingel martin (QB) may be there, though right now that's not really a need. D Quillen will go undrafted (6'6" 4.5 WR) and he's worth a flyer, even if he'd only be #5 on the depth chart. anyone else know of CBs/DTs worth considering still in FA? and no, clements and law aren't good answers, they're not nickel corners and we don't need starting CBs and their massive contracts. tripplet looks gone, MK is gone. |

I know he has a bit of a history of injuries and weight problems, but I'm a bit surprised that DT Grady Jackson hasn't gotten more attention. I think he could be had for an incentive laden contract

Sat, 11 Mar 2006 23:23:58 -0800 Mike Garafolo, of the Star-Ledger, reports the New York Giants have contacted agent Peter Schaffer regarding free agent CB Deshea Townsend (Steelers). It was unclear if Townsend is planning on visiting the team soon. Re: Filling the rest of the roster holes.
i don't think brandon short would be a starter at outside linebacker. maybe we could pick up julian peterson, but i think he wants big money.

Re: Filling the rest of the roster holes.
i think julian iss really out of the price range. we expressed interest, but not as a serious bidder... these WRs could be 10mill a year between them, plus a DE and a S.
that means everyone else has to be cheap. |

Andre Carter would be money i think. He can line up at DE or OLB. I have no idea what kind of money he wants though, 7th pick in the draft a few years ago hasn't really plyed to potential but very solid player.

Re: Filling the rest of the roster holes.
I think andre is our answer at DE, not OLB (cause he's too slow)

seriously, we have a 2nd rounder and a bunch of vet min picks. new cba = re-prorate everyone over an extra year and the ability to prorate option/roster bonuses into signing bonus. plus jansen/thomas/brunell could now turn base roster into bonus money for a far greater savings than before (cause the 30% rule no longer applies and the extra year to pro-rate over). the upper limit is close to ~26mill, though 19-20mill might be more realistic. |
