Jets interested in Betts?

What do you guys make of this? I say there's no way we trade him unless the Jets come with an outstanding offer.

Betts on Jets' radar
August 11
New York Daily News (scroll down): "With Curtis Martin's career in jeopardy, the Jets are eager to see if Derrick Blaylock and Cedric Houston can do the job. If not, they almost certainly will trade for a veteran. The Redskins' Ladell Betts has emerged as a possibility."

There is no way Gibbs would ever ever ever ever ever ever ever trade Ladell Betts. Unless it was for two first rounders.

These rumors are stemming from either the Jets' front office who may simply be brainstorming, trying to think of teams with great RB depth; or from the Jets' fans/media who remember the recent trades and deals between the 'Skins and Jets, and think they might partner up for a deal once again.

As soon as this issue is presented to Gibbs, I can 100% guarantee you his answer will be something to the effect of "Ladell Betts is not available."

End of story.

Why so confident that Gibbs won't trade him? He's a free agent after this season & maybe they done the #s & realize they won't be able to offer him much. He'll want to go somewhere he can start too, & that will only be by injury here.
If we do trade him, we better get something big in return, we've been hookin the Jets up w/sweet deals for far too long, even our draft day trade to get Rocky was way too one-sided. Who do they have that we need?

1) Player for player trades in the NFL are extremely rare. If we traded Betts, it would be for picks. But we won't trade him because...

2) You do realize Joe Gibbs is the coach of the 'Skins right? He values depth soooo much. Rock Cartwright is alright at times, and Lumsden is looking good in camp, but in the end do you see Gibbs trusting the backup job to either of those guys? No way in hell.

3) Saunders LOVES Ladell Betts. He has said that Betts is capable of big things in this league, and compared his skill set to that of Priest Holmes (not a quality comparison, just a style comparison). Saunders has said that Ladell is a complete back, capable of running hard, catching passes reliably, and picking up blitzes consistently. He has also said that Betts and Portis have unique skill sets, and in certain situations, he'll put them both in the same backfield to create matchup problems with the defense.

Just pay attention to the coaching staff. There's no way they're trading this guy.

If we're talking about predictions, then I'd agree its unlikely a trade will be made. And I say that w/the confidence that we would ask for too much. But if the jets are desparate enough & offer us a starter w/a contract we can deal with, its definitely worth doing. I say that because I have a feeling betts will get some $ next year & it won't be w/us.
I hope he stays & re-signs w/us. Sure the coaching staff loves him, but they also have to deal w/the contract issue, something that Gibbs has shown he's willing to be fairly shrewd with, e.g. Pierce, Smoot, Coles, Lavar.

So in other words Ladell Betts is a franchise player? Has he ever played a full season (in a backup role I might add)? If they offered a proven offensive lineman, I would pull the trigger immediately.

I don't think anyone is saying that Betts is a great franchise back. However, I think the general consensus is that we should not give up a key player just when we seem to have everything in place for a Super Bowl run. He might not be a starter, but he is an excellent change-up back who could step up if, God forbid, Portis went down.

Also, I don't know of any young, proven offensive linemen on the Jets roster.

Re: Jets interested in Betts?

Betts is too important to our RB depth to trade him.

Think about it, if Portis went down would you want Cartwright becoming the featured guy?? Please.

Once again, Betts is too important to trade. I agree with Schneed 110%. There's no way we deal him.

Well Matty you know I am a big Betts guy, but if a #1 is offered [and I don't believe it will] I would have to do it, I feel we have enough quality depth behind Betts if anything happens to Portis to succeed, I think the best that would be offered is a #2 though, I would have to think about making that trade, but if I truly believe it would be a high #2 I probably would do it, but I would have to be very confident in the backups to pull that trigger.

If Portis went down I don't know if we would have a featured back persay, we would get a strong dose of running back by committee.

But as you stated we don't do much with our picks anyway. I seriously doubt theres anything more than speculation from some reporter on this story.

Re: Jets interested in Betts?

We're gunning for a Super Bowl run, what good is a draft pick going to do us right now? Nothing. Besides, this front office really doesn't place much emphasis on building via the draft. I really can't think of one realistic reason why we would deal him.

Re: Jets interested in Betts?

I've got to go with Scheed and Matty on this.

Betts is too important to the team's depth to let him go right now. I understand that we could lose him to free agency at the end of the season but at least that would give the front office time to look for a replacement. There's almost no time before the season starts to get a back-up that the team would feel comfortable with, IMO, especially since the coaching staff seems to like Betts so much.

Re: Jets interested in Betts?

I know one thing, if Portis went down, I definitely wouldn't want Rock Cartwright or Jesse Lumsden in there as the last line of defense for picking up blitzing linebackers. While I'm eager to see what Jason Campbell can do, in no way do I want to see Brunell get hurt. We tend to think about the running production from a RB more than anything, and the tendency is to forget about the pass protection. But an RBs role as a pass blocker is just as important as anything. We've all read it and said it over and over, Brunell's health is key to the 'Skins success in 2006. So let's keep him healthy and pretty please make sure we are two-deep with solid pass blocking RBs.

Re: Jets interested in Betts?

I agree with schneed as i think betts means more to us than he would mean to the jets or anyother team. We value him more than anyone else would. Our coaches are in love with him and feel he is as valuable as an extremely high pick but the jets probably don't think so. We wouldn't be able to reach an agreement.

Betts to me is very important to this team. He and clinton should be splitting the carries. It will be very important for him to do well and stay on this team.

THe only thing that i think that might make this happen is our depth. Everyone loves rock and jessie is playing well. Jesse and nemo are bigger backs than betts so i think they could make up for his loss on the goalline. I really hope jesse makes this team. He really makes me excited.

Re: Jets interested in Betts?

This is an interesting debate. I agree that Betts is very valuable to the Skins and they would be unlikely to trade him BUT the thing to remember here is that every player in the league has a price.

Remember Portis = Bailey

If the deal was sweet enough Gibbs and Co. would have to take it seriously.

Would you trade Betts for a top notch O-lineman right now and picks?
