Re: Reassuring video from Ken Harvey on Portis' shoulder

Just said it makes the shoulder more liable to pop out, but it's a totally non-serious injury. He also said its about the will of the player in question and Portis is as tough as they come.

Re: Reassuring video from Ken Harvey on Portis' shoulder

Seems like the type of injury that if it happened in week 15 of the season Portis would just get a cortisone shot and play through the pain.

It's not like I'm feeling totally footloose and fancy-free about it, but it's definitely not a major blow to us. Springs makes me much more nervous. The depth isn't there behind him, and if this groin thing nags him he'll be useless. It means he can't cut and change directions.

I agree there, but I also remember he's been playing with it in the scrimmage AND the Bengals game. Hopefully, everything will work itself out and we'll be all good for September 11th.

Yeah. I just have visions of what happened to him during last year's playoffs. He gave up a TD to Reggie Brown in week 17. Then missed the Tampa game. Then was limited against Seattle. I get the feeling he had this same problem at the end of last year, then he rested it for a long time and it mostly went away, but then when he saw game action again against the Bengals it flared up. Makes me nervous and I hope the docs get the procedure fixed right the first time and that it doesn't come back.

That's why they're docs though. I'd rather get our guys healthy now and have them for the stretch run than see them get nagged all season long.

Re: Reassuring video from Ken Harvey on Portis' shoulder

If it's anything like the subluxations I've experienced, it's not that big of a deal. I've had virtually every shoulder injury you can imagine, from broken clavicles to full dislocations to subluxations, and subluxations are certainly the most minor of those injuries.

The subluxations I experienced seemed to be an after-effect of the dislocation I suffered playing football. The dislocation caused some significant damage to the rotator cuff, and made me susceptible to subluxations, probably because the rotator cuff (which holds the joint together) never healed up quite right. My shoulder would sublux whenever I put significant weight on it, like when I would place a barbell on my shoulders to do squats. But part of the problem there is that when you do squats, your arms are externally rotated in an awkward position to hold the barbell, making the damaged shoulder joint more susceptible to subluxation.

It took me a couple of months to fully heal and rehab from the dislocation, due to the rotator cuff damage. But the subluxations were more of a minor inconvenience than anything else. It usually took about a week for the soreness to go away and the joint would feel normal again. I just learned to stop doing squats and find other exercises that didn't put that kind of stress on the joint, like leg presses.

I think Portis will be fine. He's a tough dude, and he'll do what he needs to do to be ready for Week 1. Guys his age mend pretty quickly, so I don't think there's a whole lot to worry about. Keeping him on the sideline the rest of the preseason will help.

I agree with Schneed, though. Springs's injury is much more worrisome to me.

The Ego is a hungry beast that must be fed! Maybe I need to change The Ego's diet to smaller portions with more frequent meals.

I need to put The Ego on TheMalcolmConnection plan.

Ken Harvey also grabs his nose when He says Portis will be back in time of the regular season but also says he will not be back unless he's 100%. When it comes to medical talk Ken is not gifted that interview did little to dispell my worries though my worries are about Springs more.

Like I said, I doubt he has any real insight here. It's just a feel-good type of thing.

We'll see about Portis and Springs. Hopefully, we'll be getting more pressure this year, and our CBs won't be so exposed. Remember, in preseason, Williams like to hang guys out to dry to see what they can do. In the season, he'll work to give help to any soft spots.

Re: Reassuring video from Ken Harvey on Portis' shoulder

Whew, it sure is a relief to get Ken Harvey's views on this.

I'm trying to find Ken Harvey's other medical pronouncements. I have a link somewhere...anyway there is one where is talking about John Bobbitt, after Bobbit had his male organ cut off by Lorena his wife, and Harvey said, "I haven't had my male organ cut off, though I have been racked very good a few times. But he'll get that sewn back on there and I'm sure he'll come back. And although I am not a doctor, I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night."

I am also looking for Senator Frist's analysis of Portis' injury via video. Frist is remarkable in how he can look at a video and make a diagnosis of things like whether someone has been in coma for decades is actually not brain dead, like he did with Terri Schaivo.

He shot at my dog but missed, thankfully. Basically, in our neighborhood, if you go out and see someone's dog shot, usually you look down the street and there is Ken running off, or driving away. I don't think he realizes how much people's dogs mean to them - he thinks he's just having good fun.

No, I don't have anything against Ken and normally I enjoy his commentaries - it's just a little ripe for parody I think for the Post to turn to him to get a medical analysis on this.

I can already see Portis giving us "Emmit Smith" type highlights in December.

I hope it is snowing when it happens!!!!
