Tony McGee Reaction to 2-5 record

Hello Everyone,

Another busy week in a string of them, but the Redskins are not making things any easier for me. It was a terrible performance in my opinion. It was a good second half, as you know but they seemed ok with going into the half with the lead and took that as the victory. Now at 5 losses on the season, they need to win 8 or 9 in this point.

My solution to the problem? Offensively, scrap the new offense completely and just play rock hard football! The offensive line needs to do a little bit better, but I think our receivers are all playing well at this point. I’m not sold that Brunell can’t get the job done, but with the pressure they have had on the QB along with running this new offense, it’s just not the right personnel for this. The season isn’t lost yet, but it’s very close to being at that point. The biggest mistake we made this off-season was singing Adam Archuletta and losing Ryan Clark has made Sean Taylor play worse because he has had to worry about so much more. Andre Carter isn’t where the Redskins thought he would be at this point, but he is coming on if you ask me. Looking at our corners, Wright is ok, Rumph stinks, and Walt Harris, although he struggled at times last year, is an upgrade over either of these guys.

For Jason Campbell to take over, I think that point comes when they lose 7 games. Up until they lose 7 games, they are going to go with Mark Brunell. The offense can make plays when the move the ball around, but Campbell will only come in when Washington loses 7 games.

Weather you know it or not, the TJ Duckett trade was actually two-fold. They didn’t want the Philadelphia Eagles to trade for him, and the injury to Clinton Portis. I think he can be important in the future, but with Portis, Betts and Rock being the special teams guy that he is, I understand why he’s not in there. There are too many running backs without enough room for all of them to fit. If the Skins’ start going to the run more often, we will see Duckett more in jumbo packages.

Coming back from the bye, they know the season is on the line. In my opinion, two football games can turn it all around. If they can pull off wins against Dallas, and against Philadelphia, then they can look at making a serious run down the stretch. With the team the Redskins have in terms of talent, the season is not over until they reach 7 or 8 losses; however there is no margin for error.

re: TJ, preventing Phili from getting him will do nothing to stop D Nabb from tossing for 350 while a capable westbrook runs for 120 with matching recieving yards. Moreover, the choice of not using him in short yardage situations is unforgiveable, its what he does, and frankly, nobody on our team can do it better. Rock, and betts are both traditional fumblers, and Gibbs has consistently chosen to take portis out of 3rd down situations. At 2-5, the season may not be lost, but it is certainly on life support. We may not win with Campbell, but we AREN'T winning with Brunell. What is the downside?

Well, imagine for a second how dangerous Philly would be with a smashmouth back like Duckett who could grind and run time off the clock for them like in the Giants game? With a back like that, they would probably be the most complete team in the NFC.

hmmm, so the arguement is that TJ is sooo good that we can't allow him to go to a team that will likely crush us anyway, yet, we can't find a spot for him to play on a 2-5 team? doesn't add up. one way or another, Gibbs screwed up. we can't continue to give up picks for people that arean't playing. aquiring TJ was a mistake (given his current usage level).

We didn't want him to go to Philly AND if you remember we had some serious concerns about Portis, and given Betts' injury history, at the time it appeared to be a good move. It's easy to blast the move in hindsight, but I don't recall hearing too much of an outcry at the time the move was made.

Who knows, perhaps Betts is gone next year and we keep Duckett as the #2. Either way, one of these guys will be gone next year.

my beef is not with the acquisition, it is with his use...if you are going to trade for someone of his caliber, you have to use him...if betts isn't going to stay around, then why not trade him before the deadline? we have a far too cavalier attitude towards draft picks. say what you want about blasting in hindsight, however, not using him only diminishes his value at season end and highlights our incompetence...i repeat, if he is THAT good (and i think he is), why can't our 2-5 team find a spot for him? I'm willing to bet, that they'd have more carries in San Diego, were he there...(course, they would not be dumb enough to make that deal...)

I thought Tony laid it out well as to why he's not playing.

I think he can be important in the future, but with Portis, Betts and Rock being the special teams guy that he is, I understand why he’s not in there. With everyone healthy and playing well, it's tough to get him in there.

He's just one injury away from being a very key guy.

I really don't think his value will be diminished much by not playing him. Teams know what he is capable of from the Falcons. There would definitely be some strong interest in him if he became available.

I agree with Tony's comments regarding Andre Carter. While Carter is ineffective against the run and has not had enough sacks to justify his monster deal, he's been getting decent pressure on QBs. He's had a couple of sacks and a bunch of QB pressures (e.g. the play that resulted in Leftwich throwing a pick and the play where Manning got lit up). I hope he continues to improve and eventually justifies his contract numbers.
