Windows Vista
Is/did anyone pick this up today?
I am very interested to know what type of an upgrade it is as compared to Windows XP, which I've never been a huge fan of.

Re: Windows Vista
We've been beta testing it for months now and basically it's Windows XP with all the functionality of a Mac. Benchmarks tests we did showed it to be slower than Windows XP, it IS more stable and just looks "pretty", but I won't be deploying that to any of my users including myself until the first service pack is out for it.

Re: Windows Vista
I haven't read a good review of the upgrade process yet. I think the only viable option is to go for a clean install.

Re: Windows Vista
That's without a doubt. We did it here and it was messy. MY problem is that it's missing drivers for a lot of legacy hardware and are basically giving a big "F-U" to the consumer saying they won't release drivers for them.

Re: Windows Vista
While I'm intrigued by anything new like this, I'm going to stick with XP for a while. Either that, or I'll go Linux.

Re: Windows Vista
Weren't there driver problems when XP came out as well? So that really isn't anything new.
From what I understand, your best bet is to buy a machine with Vista preinstalled...because that way, you know it'll work with the hardware.

Re: Windows Vista
Right, which is why I'm waiting until service pack 1. I'm not worried about it working on newer hardware, it's people's older printers, scanners, etc.

Re: Windows Vista
It is like a new gaming console and Matty's theory...wait until they fix the problems first before buying!

Re: Windows Vista
The difference between a gaming console and an operating system is that the OS will at least get upgraded at some point.

Re: Windows Vista
I've learned this the hard way with prior Windows releases: Wait about 6 months after the release of the new OS before you get it...bugs and flaws are ALWAYS in the first edition for the customers to suffer through and work out. I spent 6 months without the internet to get Windows 95 running smoothly when we preordered it.
I'm happy with XP now (wasn't when it was new though) and am in no mood to go through the guinnea pig phase with MS again. You should wait until at least the first service pack and big update download. That's just my opinion though. |

Re: Windows Vista
I also was beta teting and wasn't very impressed, couldn't use some hardware and whatnot, one thing I found cool was the Media Center package built in. But the computer I have hooked to my TV to use it with didn't have 256 memory so I couldn't use it there basically I found it to be a prettied up XP, like the XP that gets it's salsa from New York city!

Re: Windows Vista
It's like XP with nice UI and little more features. Most of the work that went into Vista wasn't on the surface. It's definitely not worth the $$.
