Redskins Insider: Afternoon Update

Redskins Insider

Practice lasted just over an hour and it was flippin hot out there. All in all, though, several veterans have said privately that while the pace of camp is higher than in some years past here, it hasn't been anything remotely Marty-like and that overall the feel of things has been a little off.

You don't hear a lot of chatter. You don't hear the pads cracking. It certainly hasn't been ubber-physical and a few players said they had discussed as much with their teammates. We'll see if that picks up. I really thought Wednesday night was going to be that ferocious practice I've been waiting for, but a lot of people who have watched this entire week of practice now have come away saying the same thing - this ain't no party, this ain't no disco .. but it also ain't Camp Crunch either.

As for injuries, WR Brandon LLoyd sat out most of practice with shin splints. He's day to day. Jason Fabini didn't do much either and he has a groin problem that is also minor, Bubba said.

As far as evaluating players and the like, I'll do more of that after the scrimmage when we've had time to really start to formulate an opinion on this stuff.

I wonder if Moss' ball spin thing will get him fined? I guess an official wont have to go chasing it, but it's still a celebration involving the ball. Will be interesting to see them call those penalties early in the season.

In today's NFL we just don't see that much old school training anymore. The athletes have gotten so freakishly big and fast that the risks outweigh the rewards with regards to having your team beat up on each other to get ready for the season. Bring in self motivated people with regards to keeping in top physical shape so then you can focus more on the cerebral aspects of the game. NFL offenses especially seem to have evolved to a point that requires a remarkable attention to detail. The teams that outwork you mentally are the ones that are usually winning the rings. Colts and especially the Patriots. The Steelers bucked the trend and won a ring with more of an old school smash mouth approach.
