Ken Hamlin - Free Agent!

I was wondering what do you guys think about us pursuing him to be our free safety and moving dirty 30 back at strong safety. He wll not cost us a lot of money and should be an upgrade over Doughty. He is only 26 years of age. He is 6-2 206 lbs and is a ball hawk. I loved the way Doughty played for us for down the stretch but let's be real he should not have been starting for us (I miss you Sean). I'm interested in what you guys have to say. In Blache's scheme we will be a pressure defense which relies heavily on turnovers like those Bears defenses when he was there. Hamlin would be great in this scheme.

Hamlin from Dallas? I know he had alot of interceptions.. but i'd need to see more footage of his basic covering / tackling skills. To be honest though, I'd rather take a chance with a safety in one of the later rounds in the draft..

I like Reed Doughty a lot, and I think he'll continue to get better. He's a very sure tackler and takes good angles to the ballcarrier. I see higher priorities in the player acquisition department.

I like Reed too. He might never be a superstar but who's to say he can't develop into a solid starter?

Playing next to Superstar Landry will mask a lot of his coverage deficencies.

Doughty is good at a few things and has the ability to improve in many others, and that's why he deserves to start as SS in 2008.

yeah I don't think the Cowboys will let him go. And if they do, I think Parcells might jump at him

Laron Landry is an NFL free safety. He is the fastest saftey in the entire league. Using him as a strong safety is a major waste because of his unusual speed even though he is very well suited to play either position.

You would think that Landry would be well suited to play free safety. Laron certainly seemed to make more plays after he was moved to free safety in the last quarter of the season. He wasn't a turnover machine, but he broke up an awful lot of passes and was able to build up speed to put big hits on opposing wideouts.

But, I swear that I've read that the coaches want Landry to move back to strong safety, in which case we may very well be in the market for a free safety. I like Doughty, but probably he's not fast enough to play FS and I wouldn't be particularly surprised to see him relegated to a reserve role.

If that's the case that they want to move Landry to strong safety, then I wouldn't mind Reggie Smith out of Oklahoma. Or how about Eugene Wilson?

If he stays at FS, how about Madeiu Williams?

Landry is going to be a Pro Bowl free safety very soon. I just remember him ball hawking against Seattle. He was just all over the place. I would just leave the safetly positions alone and gamble on Reed. We simply have more pressing needs.

Re: Ken Hamlin - Free Agent!

I agree, i feel like we actually played better defensively when doughty was the strong safety. When we had Sean Taylor as our FS and Landry as our SS we were playing safe zone coverage. Once sean taylor passed, and we moved landry our d started playing more aggressively, more blitzing and less zone.. Landry will be just as good as sean taylor, if not better... Doughty's strength is playing the run and blitzing, notice how he always found the hole to blitz. This year i doubt we'll be seeing doughty in coverage that much... Which is why we must go corner for the first round or FA

Re: Ken Hamlin - Free Agent!

Perhaps you should change the title, I saw it and was under the impression he is a free agent. Either way I think we have more pressing needs than safety, Doughty played decent enough last year to at least compete for the job this year. Plus everything I've heard indicates that Hamlin is not that good of a safety in coverage.

Re: Ken Hamlin - Free Agent!

I like Doughty but, the guy is a huge liability in pass-coverage. He always came off as kind of a LB that was just stuck back there. I mean, the guy seems to be a good team guy and he's excellent at stopping the run but, I just don't want to see him in coverage against any teams #1 or #2 receiver.

I think, if we could get him for reasonably cheap, we should. Taking a safety that is proven in this league is a lot better IMO than taking a draft guy and expecting him to be a star from day 1. Not that I'm against drafting a young safety, because that DEF needs to be addressed. I just don't think it could hurt picking him, if for nothing else but depth.
