Re: F...Toyota
I agree...way too many Toyotas with major issues. Many of my coworkers have Toyotas, with major issues and/or recalls. They're gone off a cliff quality-wise in the past few years.

It should have a 5yr/60k mile powertrain warranty. Being out of warranty by only 2k miles, Toyota should not give you too much grief over having them pay for the repair. Unless they find evidence of abuse. The dealership should be happy to call the regional Toyota folks to request authorization to replace it no charge. If they don't, call them yourself (calmly) and explain the issue, and I bet they'll pay for it. Which engine do you have, the v8 or v6?

Re: F...Toyota
Yeah, it's unfortunate for the people buying them with the "stereotype" or expectation that they'd maintain their past level of quality. Also didn't help that Consumer Reports had been recycling old quality tests and ratings instead of re-testing newer models. Things were going downhill and only the people who bought them found out...prospective shoppers had no clue.
Anyways, are transmissions a common issue with that model? Maybe check a forum for that specific model. If I were you, don't give up until they cover the entire thing. It's barely out of warranty and far before a reasonable failure mileage. Demand a loner car too...that job could take them awhile, especially with them being busy on the newest recall...2005-08 Corolla and Matrix with soldering issues, causing the engine to just stop, even at highway speed. Someone I work with has that car. Scary. There have been some accidents due to it. Good luck.

Re: F...Toyota
Wow...that's bad. Every car forum I've been on discusses problems...and how to fix them...and what models/transmissions to avoid buying.
Sometimes, Toyota fans remind me of Apple fans...or Starbucks patrons. Many times, the same person is all three.

Re: F...Toyota
Man they do everything they can to avoid giving you service with your warranty. My aux. jack broke back in my '09 Corolla about March this year while it was still under warranty (3 yr, 36k miles) and they tried to do everything they could to avoid repairing it until I finally got fed up and told them to fix it. Also the tire pressure indicator light is on and I think there's a malfunction in the system because it blinks for a minute when I turn the car on and stays solid, and according to the manual that means there's a problem with the system and not a tire. Because the psi in all 4 tires is normal, so it shouldn't be on. But they told me it wasn't them and maybe a stem broke and that's what's causing it. So I've had to deal with that for a while now.
Plus as recently as a month ago my aux. jack broke again, like all the times pulling the cord in/out has caused the jack itself to loosen from the dash thus creating an unstable connection. So I took the car to the dealership again, and they told me since the car's warranty expired at 36k miles (I was at 36,700) I would have to pay 100 bucks for the part and some obscene amount for the labor. In short, I hate them. Everybody that works at the dealership near my house is an asshole and their bottom line is doing whatever they can to avoid servicing cars under warranty. |

Re: F...Toyota
I haven't heard of a single transmission failure in the 4th gen 4Runners.
Obviously, that's not to say that there haven't been any, but I definitely would have heard about it if it was widespread.

If you search the Toyota threads they are out there and no it is not a widespread issue. The thing is Toyota and Toyota owners brag and brag how the cars are built so well...etc etc and in all reality the newer ones are not as reliable as the old ones. I am just fustrated today beacasue A) my car broke way before it should have and b) i am eating a ton of crow at home becasue no one in my family really likes the car but I convinced them to get on the reliability factor, which is now just a huge egg on my face.
