Another wide receiver rumor
Several teams are reported to be interested in Cleveland Browns' WR, Andre Davis, even though he missed a bunch of action last season with an injury. The Skins are supposedly one of those teams and the bidding seems to be a 4th round pick at the moment. Obviously, the Browns hope to be able to kick that up a bit.
Davis is not spectacular by any means but is steady and reliable and one scouting report on him coming out of college said that he could catch a cannon ball if he could get a hand on it. Who knows if this is real or just fantasy? Keep your ear to the ground...

When he is healthy he does good things. He is pretty fast and young too. I wouldn't ming this at all. Then we could get a DE and some help on the line.

former 2nd round pick out of tech. saw a lot of him. hes a burner, i believe he had 20 ypc last season. a 4th rounder would be a great value for him.

A 4th for him would be sweet. He's gotta stay healthy though; but as you said he's unspectacular, but consitent. Consitency out of a #2 WR is all I ask.

the thing to remember is that he is only in his 3rd year in a terrible system with terrible quaterbacks(well he had garcia this year but got hurt after 7 games). bringing him in for a 4th is a good idea if healthy, definately worth the risk.

well if we can get a 2nd or 3rd for gardner...
I dont know how much of an upgrade he would be, but we would get a pick upgrade if anything

I agree that Davis would be a great value pickup for a 4th rounder, but is he really what the Skins need? In my opinion, we need a legitimate deep-ball receiver to spread out the defense and open up some holes for Portis. Granted, Davis has wheels, and he has reasonable size, but he isn't exactly the type of receiver that strikes fear in opposing defenses.
Basically, if we are pondering giving a 4th for Davis, we need to ask ourselves: Is giving up a 4th rounder worth the small upgrade from Jacobs to Davis? I'm not so sure it is. If we aren't going to draft a receiver, or if we aren't going to pick up one of the premiere FA receivers, then we might want to stick with the guys we have and try to develop Jacobs. |

Re: Another wide receiver rumor
i think that davis has what no one has on the redskin current roster-- legitimate deep speed. plus, his hands are above average. the knock on him has been injuries. bad luck? or a brittle player like westbrook?
plus, he has had to play with woefully inaccurate qb's, or with one who has demonstrated zero arm strength. he has an upside, to be certain, because he is young. as far as i have read, he has no personality issues. so for a 4th rounder, he would be well worth the risk IMHO. he also would likely to be effective far earlier than even a premium draft pick such as williams, edwards or clayton. he already knows the speed of the pro game and the way nfl corners try to keep a wideout from getting off the line. given that we have wasted mid round picks on players like mccants and russell, there is little downside as long as he checks out medically. given also, that the team will be without gardner and most likely mccants (unless he and gibbs can reach a meeting of minds and hearts) that leaves the wideout corps very thin potentially. going into next year with a possibly hobbled coles, an unproductive (thus far) jacobs, and a mediocre (at best) thrash is not the kind of dynamic receiver corps that puts fear into opponents db's. if we are not going to go after a proven wideout in free agency (mason?? muhammed??) then it sounds like davis would be the best option by far.... |

Re: Another wide receiver rumor
Yes, this sounds like a good person to try to bring on board. We have to have more speed in our WR corps, and Davis brings some big league experience as well. If we could sign him, it makes it more realistic to draft Mike Williams, who doesn't bring great speed to the table, but seems like a sure bet to be productive.
We could line up with Taylor Jacobs who is fast and just needs a chance to get a lot of playing time. Coles is there. We draft Mike Williams, and begin to develop him. We work in Andre Davis as a third receiver. Thrash comes in to provide a spark. This compared to last year with Coles' injury issues, Gardner's ups and downs, Jacobs not really getting much opportunity, and McCants refusing to be a team player and work on special teams. |

Still I don't think they make this deal thinking Davis ia the answer. I mean we haven't really done much to improve the WR core this was more of a lateral move in talent for an upgrade in that 4th pick. Going WR in the 1st still makes sense. Imagine a WR core of M Williams L Coles Jacobs Davis Thrash Compared to L Coles Gardner Jacobs Thrash McCants Thats an upgrade at every spot except the third spot where Jacobs remains adnd will hopefully get better anyways. Sounds like a good plan to me. |

FRPLG, I like that lineup w/ Davis as our #3 reciever (slot). Jacobs would have an expanded role also. |

Re: Another wide receiver rumor
The question is... Would we trade Gardner for Davis straight up? The answer is...Yes.
Ignoring market concerns I'd say go with Davis because at least he can catch the damn ball and even he is hurt then at least he wont be dropping balls. All kidding aside I think gardner has worn out his welcome in DC and getting a guy like Dvais for a 4th would be nice if we could cut Gardner loose for a 3rd. I think the drop off in talent is negligible if there is any and Davis could make a sort of home coming to the DC/VA/MD area. He has speed, we need it. He has some size, that offsets losing Gardner. Go for it. He's probably better than the 4th round player we'd draft. |

Re: Another wide receiver rumor
Jacobs has so much talent. He played will in the MN game - I think we should sign him to a long extention, provided he'll come fairly cheap, THEN give him a bigger role!
