anybody have DSL?
Just wondering how it compares to a cable modem.
When I move and get hooked up with DirecTV I was thinking of going the DSL route to save some $$. I love cable but at $45 a month it's a little steep. |

Re: anybody have DSL?
I notice a huge difference when it comes to "downloading". Do notice the ""s.

Re: anybody have DSL?
Basically. I mean if you're not into a lot of heavy downloading then you won't really notice the difference. If you DO a lot of downloading, cable is where it's at.

Re: anybody have DSL?
I have 1.5 meg DSL, and its very good for downloading files. I ususally pull down hour long pod casts in less than 10 minutes. If you bundle it with your phone company it should cost you around 50 a month for phone and internet(after the rapping on set up fees). But I live in Iowa, so its hard to say what you will pay in NY.

Re: anybody have DSL?
i have about 12meg/second cable for whatever cox charges... i'm a download whore/pack rat though, so the 10$ difference isn't worth it to me to slow down
If you don't watch ALL of your TV shows on your PC or whatever else, then dsl is fine. |

Alright Matty, I don't know about the rates up there in New York, so I'll base this on the rates here in Southern Virginia. For cable internet, I am paying around $45 - $48 a month for a 4 MB download and whatever it is for the upload (the cable internet here is not two way, so the upload speeds are somwhere around half the download...not a big deal however.) For basically $5 to $10 bucks less, you can get DSL from Sprint for the slowest speed (which is 256 KB/sec download.) For around the same price or a bit higher, the "mid-grade" DSL is around 1MB/sec and for about $70 a month, you can get the 3MB/sec - which is still slower than the cable and costs almost twice as much a month. You're also not immune to having drop outs in your internet performance - and if you think $45 a month for cable broadband is steep, then you're probably not going to be able to upgrade to the faster DSL. We have DSL at work, and although the pages load up at relatively the same rate as cable, the downloads are sllllllllooooooooooooooooooowwwww! My advice would be to stick with the cable internet if possible. You get more bang for your buck. Although I'm sure your cable company might charge you more for just having the internet, in my opinion, it's still worth it! That Guy, are you sure you have a 12 Mbps speed? Cox cable's premier package (which is the highest speed) only goes up to 5mbps download/768k upload.

Re: anybody have DSL?
i'm sure skinsguy, i'm in burke VA (within 15-20miles of DC) and they just upped us all a month or two ago... bandwidth testing sites no longer work for me because the test sites don't have enough to max my connection out. my upload still isn't amazing, but its better than it was and i don't need it much.

Re: anybody have DSL?
Which bandwidth site did you go to? I'm at work right now on a DS3 line.

Re: anybody have DSL?
Hahah just tested the DS3.....My download was 37.1 / upload was 29.2.
I'll have to test my cable whenever I come home (house sitting tonight for my fiancee.) The last time I check, I was getting pretty much all of the 4mb download.

Re: anybody have DSL?
matty, here is the list of DSL packages that Verizon offers:
http://www22.verizon.com/ForHomeDSL/...es/default.asp Says you can get one month free, next 2 months at 19.95, then rest of year for 29.95 for 3MB up/768k down. Comcast is up to 8MB up/384-768 down. The biggest thing to remember is that the more people on your block with High Speed Internet from Comcast, the more displaced the signal can become. However, with DSL, it's a dedicated line just for you. I would go with Verizon or DSL in general for a few months. If you don't like it, you can always switch back to Cable. Matty - on another note, if you are getting DirecTV, go to this link: http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/imagin...rnetAccess.jsp They may be able to get you a decent deal on DSL.

Re: anybody have DSL?
Wow, comcast is up to 8MB DL? We're supposed to be getting Comcast (since they bought out Adelphia in our area.) I would love to see that!

Re: anybody have DSL?
I think cable will run me $45/month for internet alone, with cable TV it's $40, I guess I'll just suck it up and stick with cable. I download a lot of music so I guess it's worth it to stick with cable. Thanks guys.
