Just a thought, but....do we consider trading LaVar?

He's my favorite player. I have not 1, but 2 jerseys for him, the 2nd one is personalized and only says "LaVar" on the back. That being said......do we consider trading him? Before the knives are thrown, let me throw something out for discussion. We have ther personnel to adequately substitute for LaVar. Marshall could go back to playing the weak side, and we could find another middle LB. What our team needs, is 3 starting D-lineman. Other than Cornelius (whom, by the way, I love to scream his name in that Planet of the Apes female voice when he makes a play "Cooorneeelussss!") we don't have a quality starter on the D-line. We have several great back-up players, but no one who consistently plays solid the entire game. So, we move Lavar, pick up a decent starter and a 1st or 2nd round pick, and save some cap room.

Before the bloodshed, just let me say Im not advocating this, Im throwing this out for discussion. That being said, I'll drop down as the bullets fly.

I will be pissed if we get rid of him b/c he is the face of this team! That's the problem with the NFL today, you can't keep anyone on a team for any length of time. The truth be told, we probably will end up getting rid of him and we will be lucky to get a 2nd round pick for him. I hope like hell that we keep him, but I'm starting to doubt that we will.

Yeah, I hate free agency because you can't keep talent together. Here's an idea I had: Why doesn't the league impose some type of salary cap exemption. For example, if you are drafted by a team and play out your rookie deal, than that same team can forgive up to 25% of your next deal on their books. So, say Sean Taylor plays out his deal and another team offers him 20 mill over 4 years, the Skins could sign him to the same deal and it would only count 15 million against the cap. That way, teams are rewarded for drafting well by being able to sign their free agents. In addition, teams would not mind taking chances on "developmental" players in the draft because they have a chance of signing them when they are free agents. The problem with drafting someone like Jason Campbell is that lets say he rides the pine again next year, then in year 3 he kicks ass. Well, the Skins basically paid him for 2 years to "learn the system" and when he starts playing like a bad ass they only benefit from drafting him for 3 years before someone steals him in free agency. Just a thought.

If Arrington is the face of this team it must be halloween because our record is horrible the last year and a half.

I say trade him and absorb his cap hit now, we can pick up an undrafted rookie to replace him, C.Clemons is basically doing that now.

If we could absorb his cap hit I would consider dealing him for a top DE.

I doubt it would happen though.

I hope it is possible for us to keep Lavar, but we are in need of building that defensive line.

What are the salary cap implications if we dealt him? Somehow I doubt we could absorb it, especially since we got nailed with the Coles trade.

Re: Just a thought, but....do we consider trading LaVar?

I say keep Lavar as long as his salary cap number is not seriously hurtin us. I think Williams can get him to play with in the system, it will take some time.
Regarding our D-line, Griffen and Salavea are keepers. Salavea is great run stopper, he is inexpensive and a good player when not hurt. We just need to develop some situational pass rushers, one at DT to go with Griffen and two DE's so we can sub out our current run stoppers. Then our D-line would be set. We cannot go out in free agency and pay big money for pass rush DE's. Lets draft them, it will leave more money to fix our other weakness'.
For example we need another young CB to replace W. Harris, and a soild SS would round out our D and we would be awesome. Our defense alone would get us to the promise land!

We need one more, Springs and Harris are starting to get old. Harris in particular can not be counted on to start anymore, so if we have an injury to Carlos or Springs we would be screwed. When a defense can succesfully play man to man on the corners, it makes the rest of the Defense SOOO much better. QB's would fear our blitz, with Lavar, Washington, Sean Taylor and company taking turns blitzing we would be awesome. The our pass rushing problems would be gone.

Good points! I like that - "Fear our Blitz"! Can I change my screenname to "FearMyBlitz"?

Re: Just a thought, but....do we consider trading LaVar?

Trade Arrington before June 1, his salary cap figure for 2006 would go up $800,000 from where it is now. Trade him after June 1, and you'll get a cap savings of $6 million + in 2006, but you'll carry a LOT of dead money in 2007.

I don't think it makes the most sense in the world to get rid of him yet, even if you do it post-June 1. Unless we had a crystal ball and could tell what will happen with the CBA over the next few years.

I'm quoting myself, that's funny.

Just wanted to add that the cap figures I presented above represent what would happen if we traded Arrington based on how his contract stands today.

But he's due a $6 million roster bonus in 2006, which the Skins will surely renegotiate into a signing bonus. Any comparisons, to be fair and accurate, should be done to cap expectations after the renegotiation. And in that case, we'd take a sizeable cap hit.
