Stephen Davis

According to NFL.com the Panthers are probably gonna cut Stephen Davis in the next week. Do we have a use for him? I'd be willing to sign him at a league minimum. Any thoughts on where he might end up? Does he have gas left in the tank?

no, he doesn't, he hit the wall, he's always been injury prone and its a wasted roster spot... plus he still thinks the skins did him wrong by not giving him 10mill a year.

I'm not sure where you're getting the 10mil a year from. It seems a bit of a stretch that he wanted 10mil a year, when he had just restructured his deal, the season before he was cut, to help create cap room for the team. That deal was about 6.5mil a year. When he was cut, he settled on a a deal with Carolina, for about 3mil a year. That's a pretty big step down from 10mil a year.

As far as him coming back to Washington; I don't think he has enough left in the tank to be productive.

I much as I liked Davis when he was a Redskin and feel he should retire a Redskin, I dont think he has a place on this team. we have Betts as the back up and Broughton will play a bigger role this year on short yardage, and if he plays well could get a few carries during the games.

The $10mill figure comes from the 9 year/ $90million contract he signed in 2000.

Not only that, where would Stephen Davis play in the rotation of backs we already have? There is no place on the team for him even if we could afford him, which we cant. Until there's a CBA we don't need to be thinking about signing anybody when at present we may have to consider cutting some players.

the panthers paid a lot for 1 quality season plus a couple of games from davis

i would bring him back at league mininum for a third down,short yardage back to try an save some wear and tear on c portis

and who do we cut in his place? rock or nemo ? both play special teams and have potential. davis is too old now

That ships sailed. He's done. he can't play anymore. It's a waste of a roster spot...

The short yardage back the skins should try and aquire is TJ Ducket who Atlanta is shopping in trade right now. He can probably be had for a mid to low round draft choice.

he's good in short yardage, but we dont have the space or money for a move like that. we have much more pressing issuses than rb. davis is done.

He doesn't make a lot of money and Atlanta picks up any remaining signing bonus if they trae him. the skins would just need to carry his yearly salary. A short yardage back is not the most pressing need, but it is a need. A team that's identity is running the ball should never need to line up in shot gun on third and 2. Portis is a great back, but short yardage is not his thing. I would like to have someone to use like Gibbs used Riggs in the early 90's. Ducket is filling that same role right now in Atlanta and he's good at it.

he'll want a new contract, and what would atlanta want in a trade? if the skins ask first, its going to be more than if he's shopped. we have 7 rbs right now andat least 4 that are #2-#3 quality. portis i fine in short yardage, sellers can do short yardage (280lb) and nemo was brought in to do short yardage. TJ would be a wasted roster spot and contract.
