What about that Oscar upset
I didn't see this perviously posted so i decided to take initative; What about Crash upsetting BrokeBack as best movie of the year?
Crash was a much better movie and deserved to win over the much-hyped brokeback mountain. What did you guys think? ~i'm a huge movie buff, i live for this stuff. |

I liked Goodnight, and Goodluck too; I didn't think it was stellar though. I have not seen munich and Copote so i don't have a great scope of the other best movies of the year.

munich wasn't really worth investing time in. it was done well, but at the end, you'll just be like "that's it?" cause no one actually wins or makes any progress (its kinda like The Roar Of The Greasepaint - The Smell Of The Crowd if you've ever seen that play). |

After thinking about it: your right; this year in movies was somewhat on the dull side.

if you haven't seen mirrirmask, you might like it. though the movie is more about looks than plot, the acting is pretty good and the effects are great.

Re: What about that Oscar upset
i was ok with crash winning best picture, moreso than previous oscar winners. i haven't seen brokeback, but ang lee tends to be overdramatic and drab.
i actually thought jarhead was underrated this year... a fine film, but not political enough for either spectrum to really make any noise. |

it's kind of interesting comparing the boot camp scenes between FMJ and Jarhead... the marines have changed with the times. I was reading a book by a former drill instructor where DIs aren't really allowed to curse or "verbally denigrate" a private anymore during camp... quite a fascinating read when you compare the tone of today's drill camps to the 60s. |

also wanted to mention cronenberg's "history of violence." definitely his most mainstream effort to date, but a strong piece of work nonetheless.

Re: What about that Oscar upset
I was glad to see Crash win it this year. It's a really brilliant film that I highly recommend to everyone. I saw Brokeback and thought it was very well done, but Crash easily was the best film.
What really gets to me about the whole thing is the way people involved in Brokeback (i.e. Ang Lee & the woman who wrote it) are going around throwing a temper-tantrum because they got beat. The woman who wrote Brokeback even went so far as to write a rant in a pretty big newspaper basically saying Crash was a bad film & only won because the Brokeback was such a controversial subject. She even belittled herself by referring to Crash as "Trash". Now I know that a movie based around romance between two cowboys might be controversial, but anyone who has seen Crash will tell you this is as controversial a film as you will find, about race, prejudice & the snap-judgements we make about others every day. Whatever happened to losing with class? To even be considered for "Best Film of the Year" should be considered an absolute honor, not a reason to spit & cry upon finding out you didn't win it all. Kudos to those involved in Crash. End of rant.

I read the book jarhead; it is a pretty nice read actually. I just don't see how it could have been translated to the big screen.

Re: What about that Oscar upset
I have not been to the movies in about 2 1/2 years. I just got tired of all those idiots who have no clue telling us what we should think from the poor to the war. If you notice they never date or socialize out of their click. They think we are all second class citizens and they turn their nose down to us. I realy don't care what they think and laugh at all the people who run around them like their gods. I'm not saying I will never go to the movies again but it will have to take another movie like Forest Gump to get me there. Oh, I just remembered me and my daughter went to see Chicken Little.
