Gerald Riggs Jr. A Redskin?

Now his father was a very nice Redskin. Did you know he still holds the single game Redskin rushing record at 221 yards on 9/17/89. I read that but is that right? He scord two TD's in a Super Bowl in 92. Could Gerald Riggs Jr Be a Redskin? Could he fall in the draft down to the 5th round or is that wishful thinking? Is he someone we might take a look at?

Re: Gerald Riggs Jr. A Redskin?

It's very possible he could fall to the 5th. He'd certainly be worth the pick, although we may be better off spending it somewhere else.

The allegence to the offspring of NFL superstars doesn't really guarentee draft position. In 2004, Jarrett Payton went undrafted, and the Bears had a pretty substancial weakness at #3 runningback that year. Brock Forsey ended up starting a game.

If i remember correctly,we were playing the eagles when riggs set the record, but i'm pretty sure near the end of the game he fumbled and it was returned something like 80 yrds for a td that won the game for the eagles, thats how i remember it

Also don't forget after riggs fumbled the 2 e-gals players(I don't remember names) handed the ball forward to get the TD but it wasn't called buy the ref.

Does anyone remember that game?

Re: Gerald Riggs Jr. A Redskin?

well i was almost right,i looked it up in my redskin a to z book,2nd game of 89 season, were up 37-35 with about a minute to play, riggs breaks off a 58 yrd run deep into philly territory, then on 3rd down trying to run out the clock and set up a fg,raleigh mckenzies knee knocks the ball out of riggs hands, and al harris scooped up the ball, somehow got it to wes hopkins in a very contriversial play, who raced down the sideline before being tackled by ricky sanders at the 4,next play eagles td,game over

single post season game rushing record? cause the single game record is something like 295yards vs the browns by jamal lewis a couple years ago.

Re: Gerald Riggs Jr. A Redskin?

The only way we should consider him is if we are planning on trading Ladell Betts. As much as I would hate to see him go, he is a FA after next year and he is going to be gone anyway. Denver @ 22, Carolina @ 27, NY Jets @ 29, Indy @ 30, & Pittsburgh @ 32 are all looking foe a RB. If we packaged next years number 1 and Betts we might end up with a 1st rnd pick to go with our pick at 53. Then we could address both LB & CB in the 1st and 2nd.

Or if the Jets end up as the team we with the most interest we could wait until Rnd 2 @ 35 and only give up next years 2nd. I say again I would hate to see Betts go but I really feel we are going to lose him anyway next year. And between Rock, Lumsford, and Nemo we should be ok at the Back-up RB spot.

This scenario is not viable. Portis has a tendency to miss a few plays here and there and I would not feel good with Rock as the #2. He fumbles it too much. Betts has the talent to be a starter and he isn't bad running kicks back. RB is an area where you need quality depth.

i was watchin some tapes of when spurrier was the HC, and rock wasnt all that bad as running back, i actually liked him when he took snaps, he was solid. id take rock over betts anyday, it jst seems like betts doesnt know what to do after he gets to the 2nd level, he never has big runs. rock cartwright is a stud......not to mentiion they always sow the hit when lofa tatupu laid betts out......that was vicious

Was it as nasty as Betts taking out the Cowgirl with the rib shot? I doubt it because I don't distinctly remember it...

I agree whole heartedly. And I am not saying that I want to trade Betts. I am only saying that If we were to draft Gerald Riggs Jr. the only way we would is if we made room for him by trading someone. The only RB with value other than Portis is Betts. I also believe we are going to be pleasantly surprised by Jesse Lumsden. I think between He and Rock we will have better than avg back-up at the RB position.

if you're somehow saying that drafting riggs in the 5th would make it okay to ditch betts, but its somehow not okay otherwise, that's crazy...

Re: Gerald Riggs Jr. A Redskin?

no one is going to give great value for an RB with a 1 year contract and some injury problems.

The one year contract is not a problem as you should know by now. We trade for guys with only a 1 year contract all the time. As for his injury problems you might have a point, But I still think a deal could be done. And no one said we need great value.
