Weight Of Division Record

So I was bored and was rummaging around some of the old threads on here and came across the link to CBS Sportsline's Power Rankings, where the Skins are currently the lowest ranked NFC East team (all four NFC East teams are in the top half of their rankings). I know we've all moaned about this and similar rankings in the past and of course, the poll is just someone's stupid opinion, but it got me riled up again, particularly since we had the best division record last season.

If I understand the rules correctly, a team's divisional record has no weight in the team's status as a 'Division Champion' (aside from the fact that the more division games you win, the better your W/L record will be compared to other teams in the division, and therefore, the greater chance you have of being the Division Champion). But on it's own, the divisional record is only used for tiebreaking procedures.

So do you guys think the divisional record, on it's own, should factor into the determination of the Divisional Champ? If so, how? Or would that unnecessarily complicate the standings? Forgive me if this idea has already been dissected.

I think it should. I mean if the Skins wouldn't have lost those AFC games this year, THEY would have been the NFC champs.

I say let the division record determine who's the divisional champ and if there needs to be a tiebreaker, use the overall record.

No I don't think the divisonal record should be any more of a deciding factor in deciding the champion than a tiebreaker. The sample size is too small.

Don't put too much (translation: any) stock into the CBS powerrankings. They are all Pete Prisco's opinions, and he makes ST21 look like a genius in most of his writings.

I got into an arguement with a random Vag-iants (I just came up with that one and I'm very proud) fan over this a couple of months ago. He randomly started talking shit to me because of my Skins hat at a bar even though (at the time) we were still in the playoffs and they had been shut out at home by Carolina. He tried to say they had such a great season b/c they won the division, but he wouldn't listen to my arguement that we had a better division/playoff record.

I honestly believe that if you go 6-10 with your only wins coming against division teams, you should have every right to claim the division championship. If the other teams couldn't beat you at least once, are they really that much better?

This argument makes no sense to me. We don't just play the 6 games within the division, we also play 8 other games against opponents that each of the NFC East teams also has to play. That makes 14 games against common opponents, and each one is a fair measuring stick to use to compare to your division.

Division champion based on six games??? Are you guys crazy? That would render the other 10 games of the season almost meaningless. There are 12 playoff spots, 8 of which are reserved for division champs.

yes, you are reaching that 1000 mark rather quickly so the 500 mark is considered to miniscule to bother THE BSB with. I will be watching at 1000, yet today I don't know why I feel like I should be honored, almost like it is a special day... HMMMM.

Anyway, how are you not division champion if you've beaten EVERYONE in your division, but just had bad luck elsewhere? It's kind of pointless to me to award someone you've maybe swept, division champ.

Because the NFL says best record W-L with-in your divison not best record among the divison teams.For my 2 cents ,I think it should count for more .
