Question What is our offensive identity?

Greetings faithful skins fans. I was just wondering...since when has the screen pass become a gamebreaking play? Why the heck do we run so many screens and crappy trick plays that dont seem to fool anybody. All of this dink and dunk is really kind of insulting to players of the caliber of Moss, ARE, Lloyd, Cooley and Portis. Was there a point to signing Al Saunders? We looked better last year with Portis getting 30+ carries, Cooleys 6 to 7 catches and Moss's 3 to 4 catch, 180 yard recieving games than we do with this schizophrenic crap we have now. There is no rhythm to the offense at all. Yeah the D hasnt done anything, but our emphasis last off season seemed to be offensive firepower so it makes sense to me that offense should be winning some (not all) of the games for us. Is Portis heatlhy enough to run 30+ the rest of the way, or will our FA's make a difference in the vertical game. I remember the good old days when opposing teams KNEW the counter tray was coming and could do NOTHING to stop it. Help me redskins faithful; what the heck are we doing on offense, and what SHOULD we be doing on offense?

Re: What is our offensive identity?

We have no identity right now.
What we need to do is get Brunell out, because he's afraid to embrace Saunder's system. Al must be pissed off right now.

What are you basing that on? He's afraid to embrace the system? Give some proof

I am unsure of what kind of proof you are looking for, but how about Brunell actually admitted he was just wanting the game to be over in week one, obviously implying he was not ready. Anyone that afraid to play a game can't be getting it...week 1 or not.
Also, this offense looks nothing like an Al Saunders ran offense, so either Gibbs is still running the show, or Brunell is not getting it. I love it when the camera's pan back and you can see the entire field, when that happens, everyone please look at the open receivers. There are always guys open.
Someone here said "how is it possible we have Moss, ARE, Lloyd, and Cooley and none of them are creating separation?" Ask yourself that question and the answer is obvious, it's not them, it's Brunell.
How many times did Brunell get protection time and he looked indecisive?
If Saunders would step up to the mic. he'd tell us his system is not being run properly...it won't work if Brunell is afraid. Brunell has made his mark on this world by being a guy that doesn't make mistakes. A guy that probably won't win you a game, but won't lose you a game. Saunders has an offense that the QB needs to win you games. Brunell doesn't have that in him.

The screen looked pretty good when Priest Holmes was running it.

the screen doesn't work when you don't keep your db's faithfull with the deep ball....

the screen doesn't work when you run the ball 14 times to your #1 RB...

#1 point... the screen doesn't work when you run it every single game.. all the time all day long...

this offense is no-where close to KC.

The screen pass is a powerfull weapon when utilized correctly, and I think everyone including you can agree we're basing an offense around a screen pass, as opposed using the screen pass to "hi-jack" a defense.

I ran that shit in High-school and college, while I admit the comparison isn't even close, the basic principle of a screen pass is to use it as a contrast to the deep ball... once the db's give you the 8-12 yds of respect.....we don't have that so running the SP is useless. The opposing defense watches our game film and says "the number 1 threat is the screen pass"... so they have their db's jump that motion. Lets focus on running the ball, and getting Santana the ball right now and the we'll talk about a successful screen pass.

The right thing to do against INDI is run a fake screen and mold the offense around keeping defenses faithfull, both to the run and the pass. We'll see what happends.

Re: What is our offensive identity?

I was thinking about this all day today. Who the hell are we? What are we? I don't mind the screen play, but what I do mind is the lack of a running game. For the love of god, pound the fucking ball, throw more quick slants, use the god damn TE, and throw the deep out routes lord knows your receivers are fast and can stop on a dime. Oh and get the fucking pistol armed QB out of there. I have had enough of his thumbs up sign.

Re: What is our offensive identity?

This team is built to run the football. When we successfully run the football, it opens up the pass for us. We need to stick to that philosophy against a team like Indy. Indy's run defense sucks right now. There's no better time to go back to the basics then this week.

So far our offensive identity looks a great deal like the Pink Panther. Or perhpas the Roadrunner and coyote, a big book of plays and we just can't execute any of them.

Re: What is our offensive identity?

Saunders wants his offense to be able to pass the ball at will. He's finding out each week that this team is not built that way yet. The Redskins have to run first to set up the pass.

Obviously, the game films showed a weakness with Tennessee's defense the coaches felt they could exploit with screen passes. But like others have said, the DBs can sniff out screens easily when they're this close to the line knowing nothing's going to be thrown deep.

We have none. We have yet to develope an identity on either side of the ball. Sad but true.
I think we all overrated our defense because we have become accustomed to having a strong d. Talent wise, I just don't think we have it. I over rated Archuleta personally cause I have yet to see him make a difference. Springs looked horrible, but I'll give him a couple games to return to form. Rogers is not what he should be at this point. Even though Carter has been our only pressure on the qb, he is a disappointment. So basically, the only 3 people I see actually performing well this season is, Taylor, Washington, and Griffin. Williams has had the same system in place for a while, so what's our excuse for horrible d? We can't say it's because Springs was out.
Man, it makes me miss Smoot.
