How Is Our Playcalling?

Today the Skins blew a 14 point lead. I lay the majority of the blame at the defenses' feet for allowing yet more big plays which, unfortunately, has characterized Gregg Williams' defense the past few years.

I think one area that really killed us today as well was the play calling.

I'm not calling for Gibbs' head, but it seems like he/Al lacks that killer instinct that when we have a team on the ropes, we don't finish them off.

Please discuss.

Re: How Is Our Playcalling?

That's true. Whenever we get a lead Gibbs seems to become complacent and never really tries to finish a team off. I got the feeling after we got a 14 point lead that the defense figured they were in for an easy day and didn't play as hard until there was huge stakes, and by that time Atlanta had us pretty much figured out. JC didn't play that good today, but i'm not gonna lay a lot of the blame on him, because i expected it to happen sooner or later this season. I hope in the future Gibbs/Saunders really starts trying to finish teams off instead of just being content with a lead.

Re: How Is Our Playcalling?

you have to remember, that for the past two years, we could win games like that...get a lead, let the D and running game take over. Its hard to switch gears this late in the season when nothing is going your way. I'm not saying what happened was justified though, but perhaps if the D returns to form, it won't matter so much. Someone suggested blaming the D line, and I didn't see much of the second half...but what I did see is Wright/Rumph getting burned a lot, and giving way too big of cushions

We also lost some games like this too? Remember Oak.? Remember SD? Both home losses last year with leads in the 2nd half. Personally I hate all the conservative play calling. You run to win but you throw to score. I know JC is only started his 3rd game but we still need to push the ball down the field A LOT MORE. It looked like SM was getting open all day and we should have went to him a lot more. I would also like to see Saunders call the plays from the sideline.

It was last year we won games like that not the year before we were 6/10 in 2004.

vernon fox is still better than Arch...and he's coachable, once the D gets regrouped, he could be valuable.

Re: How Is Our Playcalling?

Why does everyone want to focus on the offense when the bigger problem was the D getting gashed for 200+ yards on the ground??

Seriously. And it was actually 251, or something around that. That's friggin ridiculous.

That shouldn't be surprising. It's the Falcons - they are going to put up 200 yards rushing on you. Thing is though, they don't usually win despite all of those yards, because they are a fairly one-dimensional team.

Our defense screwed up, but it wasn't on the ground - it was in the air. Let Vick and Dunn get their yards between the 20s, but you can't let Vick throw two 15+ yard TD passes.

Yeah. With this game, they now have 7 games with 200+ rushing yards ... damn!

the problem, in my eyes, was the playcalling. betts was running all over atlanta, and for some reason, mr saunders wants to be super smart and keep passing the football. we could have dominated the time of possesion, and kepy our defense off the field, if we chose to keep running the football. and we definitely run better between the tackles, as opposed to the stupid sweeps saundrs keeps calling

Re: How Is Our Playcalling?

This is just plain out stupid. Sorry, but I have to say it. Every time when our team plays to our strengths...which is RUNNING THE FREAKIN' ball, people whine and piss their diapers because our offense is playing too conservative. Yet, look at the games we have won this year and in the recent past...it's because we have RAN THE FOOTBALL MORE THAN WE HAVE PASSED! Gee....so if we win more when we run the football, it only makes sense to run the football. I guess people want Campbell to drop back on every play and pass it 40 yards down field. I'm sure it works on your computer games.

Amen, thank you. If JC didnt throw those picks and completed a couple more passes we would have easily won the game.

I swear to god, NO ONE said shit when Saunders came here, and now people are looking for blame. I am not saying he did great or even good. He should have had more protection for Campbell, but that is it. The play calling was fine.
