Randle El Signing Shows Why Skins Can't Compete

Signing Randle El to that ridiculous #1 WR contract is another in a long string of high-priced flops that characterizes the Snyder era. Like so many of these signings, most people knew the day the deal was ANNOUNCED that it was a terrible move. This is the biggest and most obvious disaster since Snyder signed Deion Sanders a year after it was obvious that Sanders had plummeted as a player.

There was and is no way Randle El could ever have lived up to that contract. That's $8M on signing bonus and $27M of salary cap money that could have brought in a gaggle of decent to superior players. As bad as Brunell may have been, who was he going to throw to? Santana Moss has been a non-factor most of the year, Randle El is largely useless as a wideout, which leaves Brandon Lloyd. Even the Eagles acquisition of Stallworth makes the Redskins look dumb in comparison, as he's better than BOTH Randle and Lloyd.

I don't care who your QB, or your coach, or anyone is. You aren't going to have success if you don't draft or bring in quality players who meet or exceed their pay scale.

And this is hardly an isolated incident. The incompetance is ongoing. Anyone think that TJ Duckett deal made any sense at all? The guys gone in another month, and so is our 3rd round pick.

Sorry to have to disagree with your first post, but I love the guy. ARE and Carter are the two free agents we signed this past offseason who I cannot complain about.

Totally, they will be fine.
On another note, we are pioneering another type of fan. We seem to be collecting a large number of NEW bashers. Not your routine sort of Bandwagon Fare, but interesting. Only in Skins land

I've been wondering about that...
Maybe a lot of familiar people under new names? A lot seem to "slide" into the discussion more easily than a lot of newbies. (E.g., wouldn't a true newbie start posting slowly and then gradually up his posting frequency? Wouldn't a newbie also contribute to existing existing threads rather than start new ones?)
Or is it possible that these people were kicked off other boards for their behavior and are landing here in droves?

Randle El is a much needed playmake, who would you rather have returning punts in this league??? and don't tell me that isnt important, plus he can catch the ball. It's no his fault that all we do is run the ball.

No, its not his fault that we run the ball, but it is the front office's fault for signing him to a run first team- along with Brandon "model citizen" lloyd. Now, i would agree that ARE hasn't been a horrible signing- we def. overpaid for him, but i do see him as value adding- though he isn't returning many punts these days. While carter is playing better (and has a lot of tackles sunday) a couple of games does not a season make...

AA is not even worth further comment, neither is the model citizen.

far as i'm concerned, i don't want Betts back if we keep portis- which we will do. Let him go, use the money we would pay him to beef up CB or D line...whats the point of paying another guy starter money when we already have one of the highest paid back in the league! If we think Betts is THAT good, then let Portis go- which would be problematic given his injury and lack of stats. (relative to his workload).

My freinds that are Steelers fans laughed when the Skins signed ARE to that outrageous contract. Thats a lot of $ for a punt returner and a trick play specialist. I think the Skins would have done better signing Jurevicious but he's not flashy enough for this organization.

No, he's just old (32). Don't get me wrong, he's a very good wideout, but I'm glad we didn't sign him.

those same guys are sure as hell wishing they had him back. the steelers are greatly missing Randle El this year - big time! That guy does a lot that doesn't show up in the stat books. He is a bonafide game-changer. Although we may have over-paid a bit, I think it was a great signing. The bad decision, no horrible decision, was to sign brandon lloyd right after the ARE signing. Now, that was stupid!

Are you crazy? The only way ARE could have helped the Steelers this year would be to replace Roethlisberger as QB, and that'd have only worked because Roethlisberger was so terrible early in the year and if you project out ARE's QB rating over 200 throws. Besides, the Steeler's defense has been as disappointing as the Redskins, and both were comparably strong at the end of last season.

I guarantee you any conversation to offer ARE anything near Redskin money wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes in Rooney's office, unless they needed more time to stop laughing.

actually no, i am not. i live in pittsburgh. that's all anyone ever talks about here. i know what i'm talking about. the steelers offense misses ARE desperately. their receivers BLOW!

i agree with you 100% , i know a bunch of steelers fans and everyone of them wishes the steelers would have kept A.R.EL.

he was more important to that offense then people give him credit for.
